Chairman's Words September Newsletter

Spring Events
With spring well upon us in "The Bay" I hope a few more of you will bounce out of bed and attend some of the early morning breakfast events that we are staging over the next few months.
There is a very good event on September 14th with both the HSBC and Associated Marine in town from the big smoke to enlighten you with information which is appropriate to all business, not just exporters.
HSBC, who have advised of a last minute change from Trade Manager Gavin Haworth to Andrew Leys the Regional Business Manager, will be delivering an 'Exporter Update' which will include details from their recent Trade Confidence Index conducted in Australia, China, HK, India, Singapore, Vietnam and the Middle East, along with some basics on what is happening in NZ's key markets.
Andrew Scrivens from Associated Marine will talk about marine insurance from one of the world's largest players, Zurich International which owns this company.
It is rare that we get such these gents to Hawkes Bay so I encourage you to attend.

You will be aware that on October the 16th we are hosting a luncheon with Tim Groser the Trade Minister. This will be the first opportunity for regional exporters to hear first hand the trade aspirations of the new National Government and with Tim's background in FTA negotiation you will hear also of progress being made in this area which is significant in the short term to date.

For both of these events please see the detail in this issue or on our website for registration.

Export Hawke's Bay Structure

It is with some regret that I advise of the withdrawal from Export Hawke's Bay of the local representative of Export NZ (Bruce Robertson) and by default the local branch of EMA (which owns Export New Zealand nationally).
Export Hawke's Bay was conceived to help promote all exporting matters during Export Year 2007 but in 2008 the group decided that a "one stop shop" for exporting was a good idea for the region to help stop confusion and have one focus point for exporters.
Export Hawke's Bay comprises Venture Hawke's Bay, Hawke's Bay Chamber of Commerce and the regional office of NZTE and I represent industry as the independent Chair. We also have support from the Export Academy of New Zealand for seminars and short courses.

Unfortunately Export NZ regional office have decided to go their own way and you need to be aware that invites originating from Bruce are not coming from Export Hawke's Bay. We regret the confusion and duplication but have no control over this.

Mentoring Scheme a Success

The recent Export Hawke's Bay subsidised mentoring scheme has proved a success with three companies taking up the offer of advice from up to 12 export business advisers who are practitioners in their own specialist fields of, law, logistics, compliance, marketing, market research, accounting, procurement, lean manufacturing, insurance and banking and others.
We are fortunate to also include in this scheme a three hour "Come think with us" with the senior partners of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
There are only five subsidised sessions available this year and already three have been snapped up with a fourth company considering now.
Please contact us at info@exporthawkesbay.co.nz if you would like to be considered for the last spots.
It is applicable to companies considering export or who have commenced exporting and need to confirm they are on the right track.

"This mentoring process has challenged us at every step which has been hugely beneficial. It has also given us the confidence to take the business to a higher level when experts encourage us to develop specific aspects of our business we were unsure about "   ...Janice Potts, Director, Terraza Saffron

Export Academy of New Zealand

The Export Academy of New Zealand moves closer to being a fully accredited course provider with the full "Certificate & Diploma in Export Enterprise qualifications" having been written completed and moderated. These now sit with the Qualifications Authority (NZQA) for accreditation which should be complete by the end of 2009.

The Academy is offering export introductory short course of an hour in length during October and November. These courses will introduce or refresh the learner's knowledge in exporting and are great value at only $50 each.
To enrol in a course to suit you or your employees please visit www.exportacademy.ac.nz and select the short course detail.

Happy Exporting

China overhauling "chaotic" health food sector

GUANGZHOU: The Chinese government is continuing efforts to reform
what it describes as a "chaotic" domestic health food market.

China’s State Council released draft regulations on health food supervision and management in early June 2009.

If passed, the new regulations will assign responsibilty for supervising and managing the sector to the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA).

VAT cut fails to lift UK consumer spending

LONDON: Consumer spending was hardly affected by last year’s reduction in VAT, according to a recent survey.

Consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers said 88 percent of the 2,000 consumers surveyed said the cut from 17.5 percent to 15 percent had not encouraged them to spend more on goods or services.

Respondents said the Government’s £12 billion VAT cut from last November’s pre-budget report was insignificant compared to other economic factors, adding that economic uncertainty and salary cuts influenced their spending more.

Only 8 percent of those surveyed said they spent more because of the cut, while 5 percent were unaware that there had been a cut. The cut in VAT is set to be reversed on 1 January.
