It is a really "full on" couple of months that Export Hawke's Bay has ahead of it in May and June.
Next week we have the informative event "Targeting Trade Shows" with Steph Smith of the Wellington Manufacturing Cluster and Ross Sheppard and Michelle Holland of Display Solutions. These people combined have assisted many companies and groups with professional displays at international events.
This event is very timely as it is being held as we at Export Hawke's Bay announce our intention to have a presence at the World Expo in Shanghai in 2010. This is a huge event and a very big undertaking for the region and we want you to be involved. Please see the information on the website to keep up with the plans. Meantime do attend the very good workshop on the 21st at The River Bar.
The Export Breakfast for June is on a very interesting and topical subject, "Personal and Trade Security". It is very important that when we travel overseas on business (or even on holiday for that matter) that we have a contingency plan in place for the possibility of security threats. This can happen just as easily in the USA and Western Europe as in Pakistan, India and Africa.
Similarly it is important that your goods can have a "secure story" as they pass along the supply chain. This involves more transhipments in today's climate than ever before so therefore our goods "touch" many countries en route to final destination. Ben Anderson and Hemi Morete will challenge you with some interesting thoughts and services which can prepare you, your staff and goods for secure travel to international markets. See the website for the June 2 breakfast.
Export Hawke's Bay will be happy to discuss any submissions Bay companies may like to make as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) head towards a free trade agreement with India. This is an exciting development for if New Zealand can complete this agreement we have huge markets in Asia covered by FTAs when you include the ASEAN group, just completed and the China FTA completed the year before. This represents the largest population base in the world. There is an event discussing the Indian FTA coming up in June, watch the website for dates and times.
I do hope you are catching up with Export Hawke's Bay Chatroom TV on Stratos channel 89 on Sky and Channel 51 locally. These items are on at 7.30 on the third Monday of every month and showcase local exporters and services that touch export. If you miss it you can view it on line - visit our webpage and link to the series.
During June and the rest of May I hope to catch up with as many of you personally as possible. I want to survey local export companies to find out what you want from a regional focus export group like Export Hawke's Bay. Please make a half an hour available when you are contacted so we can gather this information and turn the services provided into something of valuable to your company and the region.
As always we welcome your feedback, please let us know if you have any suggestions that may help you in your exporting capacity by emailing us at

New Zealand Institute comment on "The New Zealand economy"
The New Zealand economy has performed well over the past 15 years, but a substantial challenge remains in terms of raising per capita income levels.
This project will examine the priorities for action in achieving much improved economic performance in New Zealand. How can a small, remote economy develop real competitive
strength?
