......................................................................................................................

Hi there,

Hope you are keeping warm out there in what is a chilly winter after such a warm summer.
I am told by the experts that a very cold winter does assist our growing conditions as it kills off all of the bugs and associated diseases they may transmit. Obviously not flu viruses though!
If the winters are going to be colder but the summers warmer with even less rainfall that would present a bigger problem for the growing of our products. A move to sub-tropical conditions away from our traditional "Mediterranean like" climate could have some obvious effects on the types of trees and plants that we grow, not to mention the soil and associated grass types. I wonder what the research organisations are doing about the predictions around climate change when it comes to specific regions like Hawke's Bay.  Food for thought.

Networking for Exporters

During this time of the year I am meeting with exporters on a one to one basis to see what they need from a focus group like Export Hawke's Bay. Obviously there is a need for a concentrated effort on maintaining  and  encouraging exporting in the region as it is our life blood but the form in which that encouragement or advice should take can only be dictated by the business community.
Some exporters see no need at all, they are very happy "doing their own thing" and keeping under the radar. They do not see any need for assistance from regional or central government as they have been so independent that they have done it without to date. That is fine and understood.
On the other hand there are exporters, some who are significant that know the benefit of networking with others who have similar views, markets or products. It has been suggested that the occasional get together at a set venue for businesses involved or becoming involved in exporting for each sector would be of good benefit.
For example: A network session for manufacturers, one for primary or food & beverage producers.
At such sessions the participants could provide in advance up to three problems they are experiencing with exporting their product which could receive suggested solutions from their peers or could be tackled by Export Hawke's Bay using research, government assistance or other means. I am interested in all of your thoughts.

Targeted Mentoring Services

An area I believe is of immense value to new exporters or SMEs who are developing export capability is the Export Mentoring Service being offered by Export Hawke's Bay at a fraction of the cost if the company did it alone.
This service utilises the services of export experts for a short but intense period on all aspects of exporting from business structure to marketing and financial assistance.
Export Hawke's Bay has secured a limited amount of funding to provide a complete set of services normally costing several thousands for a small investment.
Should you wish to be involved in this service as a user or a provider please contact the writer through
info@exporthawkesbay.co.nz .

 Shanghai Update

Finally in this section of the newsletter I would remind all of the very big effort being made to promote Hawke's Bay at the Shanghai 2010 EXPO. For any business currently trading with China or contemplating trading, you must see the combined effort Hawke's Bay will put forward. There is a chance to have your product or service represented without the need for you to travel to China or if you are travelling we will ensure that the facilities are there for you to make the most of your visit and entertain your guests. For more info contact us at info@exporthawkesbay.co.nz.

Happy Exporting!

New Zealand Global Engagement
As a small country, New Zealand's economic success rests in large measure on its ability to successfully engage in the global economy.  However, New Zealand's international economic activity lags that of many other developed countries.  This project will examine how New Zealand can better position itself in the global economy in terms of both private sector and government action.
